Make your own mini-zine: one sheet, eight pages, your pictures
A single sheet of paper, a few folds, and one small cut: that’s all it takes to make an eight-page booklet. I recently came across these mini-zines and immediately loved the idea. A small collection of your own images to flip through, give as a gift, or simply hand to someone.
And because discoveries like this tend to spark another idea, I built a little app: Zine Studio. You can use it to create your own mini-zine right here on my website.
What is a mini-zine?
A zine is a small, self-published booklet. It can contain photos, drawings, writing, collages, or a mix of all of these. This version turns a single sheet, printed on one side, into eight pages, including the front and back covers. The folds hold the booklet together, so there’s no need for staples or a separate binding.
For my example, I brought together a selection of my own artworks. Choosing the images is already part of the fun: Which one belongs on the cover? Which images work well together? And what should go on the last page?
From picture to little book
In Zine Studio, you upload your images and design your eight pages. You can adjust the cropping, add and position text, and choose fonts and colors. Or simply let the images speak for themselves.
The page overview shows you how your zine is put together. You can change the order. The app arranges all pages for printing. Adjustable outer margins with crop marks. Upload your design and adjust its position on the page. You can add text if you wish. Eight blank pages await your images/text. Left: Select/move page, Right: Design.
The app automatically arranges your pages for printing, so you don’t have to work out which ones need to be upside down. The print preview shows you the complete sheet, and you’ll find the folding instructions in the app too.
Here's how to proceed:
Choose your images and design your eight pages.
Open the print preview, then print your sheet or save it as a PDF.
Follow the folding instructions, make the small cut, and bring the pages together into a booklet.
A tip for printing at home: Many printers leave a white border. That’s what the “Standard printer · Trim outer margin” option is for. It scales down your layout and adds crop marks. Trim off the outer margin before folding. Your zine will be slightly smaller, but its proportions stay the same. There’s a separate option for PDFs and borderless printing.
A little collection to share
There are so many things you could make: a photo series, memories from a trip, a small portfolio, a personal gift, or a booklet filled with drawings and little observations.
If you enjoy making things by hand, you could take it a step further with a matching little box or a DIY cardboard display. Add a few copies of your zine, and you have a small collection ready to share at an exhibition, on a studio table, or at home.
I like the idea of seeing my images take this small, tangible form. Eight pages feel manageable, yet there’s still room to make something entirely your own. And it’s all homemade, too.
