Zine Studio · Web app for print-ready mini-zines
A web app that lets you design an eight-page mini-zine and output it as a finished print sheet. The concept, interface, and implementation are my own work, and it's published on kathrinfederer.ch.
The starting point: A mini-zine is created from a single sheet of paper: fold, cut once, and slide together. The tricky part comes before folding. Which side needs to be upside down, and where does the cover go? If you set this up in a layout program, you first calculate and then correct.
The solution: Zine Studio takes care of all this calculation for you. You design the eight pages as you'll read them: upload images, crop them, choose text, font, and color, and change the order in the page overview. The app automatically assembles the print sheet from these pages. It displays a preview and includes folding instructions.
The practical detail: Home printers rarely print borderless. For this, there's a special mode: The sheet is proportionally reduced and crop marks are added. You trim the edges before folding, and the zine retains its proportions. There's a separate option for PDF and borderless printing.
Context: This is a personal project, sparked by a discovery and carried through to public distribution. It's accompanied by a blog post with instructions and mockups.
